If you're looking for a place to celebrate school, work, family, or life in general, Din Tai Fung is the place to go!
Din Tai Fung originated from Taiwan and is famous for its xiao long bao - steamed soup-filled dumplings. It has currently two branches in Manila - one in SM Megamall and the other in Bonifacio High Street.
At first glance, you would think it's a bit too pricey especially when you're sticking to your usual budget and payday is still a couple of days away. But like always, we're here to give you a few tips on how you can enjoy this without spending too much!
One thing we can assure you -- this is the restaurant that will immediately make you go "wow!" at first bite.
The review:
We admire Din Tai Fung for their classiness and how they want to give their customers the best.
On weekends or holidays, you'll always notice the long line outside the restaurant. (Or even during normal days!) But you don't have to worry about long waiting times. There's a different line depending on the number of people you are in your party. So you won't have to suffer in hunger and you won't feel annoyed that only two people are seated at a table that's made for 6 or more guests.
While waiting, you can also already start ordering. They'll give you a menu and a checklist where you can start picking what you want to eat. This is very helpful because you know they're already preparing your food the moment you're sat down, rather than waiting yet again.
At every restaurant, there's certain food you always have to try. And that's what we'll include here!
1. Pork Xiao Long Bao
You can get 5 pieces for Php 160 or 10 pieces for Php 315.
The first bite is the most exciting part but you have to make sure it's not too hot! Part of the thrill is putting the whole thing in your mouth so you feel the soup burst out of the wrapper. And this tastes even more better because of the ginger + soy + rice vinegar combination they'll give you before serving your food.
There are other versions of the Xiao Long Bao but the Pork one is what you have to try first!
2. Steamed Shrimp and Pork Shao Mai
You can get 5 pieces for Php 200 and 10 pieces for Php 395.
Similar to the Xiao Long Bao, this is filled with soupy goodness that'll make you cry! No, seriously. If you're going with a small group (maybe if you're going with only one or two friends), we suggest you get 5 pieces of this and 5 pieces of the Xiao Long Bao so you can try both!
3. Din Tai Fung Hot and Sour Soup
They have this in either original or spicy flavour. The single serving is at Php 165 while the bowl for sharing is at Php 335. (You can share the single serving with one friend.)
This is another Din Tai Fung staple! This must be included in your order because why not? The soup is hot, sour, and spicy that'll also surely tease your taste buds even days after you've left the restaurant.
We suggest you get the spicy flavour especially if you're a fan of spicy foods!
4. Dry Noodles with Spicy Shrimp and Pork Wontons
A serving of this is at Php 245 and you can share it with a friend or two.
Since you already have soup, you can order this tasty dry noodles. It also has dumplings so yay! Dumpling party!
5. Golden Lava Salted Egg Yolk Bun
This is served at 2 pieces for Php 85.
This is perfect for dessert! It's yet another thing you'll love at Din Tai Fung. (Although let's get real, you'll probably love everything at this restaurant!)
You can ask them to serve this later on because it's better consumed while hot. One bite of this will bring you the salted egg yumminess and this will just help you conclude that Din Tai Fung is the restaurant to be at!
There we have it. There are also lots of other meals to try but those five are what you should try if it's your first time to eat there.
The service is amazing, the food is amazing, and the overall ambiance is amazing.
