If you're a millennial, you've probably known NETFLIX for a while now. And if you love romantic comedy movies, you also know that you can find tons of it on the said platform, like 'The Kissing Booth', 'Candy Jar', 'The Duff' and so on.. Name it and they have it! Basically, you can enjoy the genre anytime you want on Netflix.
Just recently, they released another all-new Netflix original rom-com entitled SET IT UP. But unlike their previous movies, Set It Up is R-16 and it' not a coming of age movie that will remind you about your high school or college romance. It's actually more relatable to your present life -- being the hardworking millennial in your mind 20s or 30s! Here are the reasons why we loved the film and why we think you'll like it, too!
10. You've had a crappy job
If you've had at least one crappy job in your life, or if you're in one right now, then you can absolutely relate to Charlie (Glen Powell) and Harper (Zoey Deutch)... and every Executive Assistant introduced in the movie.
As you may have already realized, it takes a lot of courage to get your dream job, to get promoted, or to just do what you really love. When we first met these two characters, they were both struggling to have the work-life balance they need, plus the hardship they face everyday because of their bosses. We really felt bad for them because it was easy to relate to their struggles of making it in a very competitive industry. It's not easy being young and having big dreams.
These two finally came up with a solution that's also the crappiest yet best idea ever! Eventually, they had their share of good times and their first real grown-up decision. So whenever you have a crappy day at work or you just can't stand your tasks or your boss, just remember Charlie and Harper's journey. You will feel comforted!
9. You've embarrassed yourself
Everyone has humiliated themselves at one point or another. And let's be honest - it happens more often than not.
It's impossible to be perfect or flawless all the time! So when the characters embarrass themselves (like when Charlie acted like a total fool wearing a corporate outfit in a baseball game, or when Harper told her boss about her article only to tell her how ugly it was), we can totally relate!
Sure, maybe you've sent out a wrong work email today or called someone a wrong name, but at least you didn't do anything nearly as bad as what Charlie and Harper did. So let's be proud of that!
8. You don't need filters
Do you try to hide something about yourself on various occasions? Like on the first date? You never want your dates to realize how nerdy you are, but you also know that they're going to find out soon enough if you end up seeing them at random moments - so you just have to tell yourself, 'there's no need to hide my true nature!'
And that's exactly why we love Harper! She's sensitive, talkative, and she can be boyish at times. She can also be a bit silly (remember the chips? 😜) and nuts at times. These are just some of the reasons why we adore her so much.
She is proof that it's okay to be completely and utterly yourself, no matter what's going on in your life or whatever tricky situations you may find yourself in. After all, Harper wouldn't be Harper if she wasn't honest to a fault. Sure, she got into a sticky situation after setting up her boss, and when she realized that she's just making excuses not to pursue her real dream, she didn't let that hinder her any more. She isn't weak and she knows she won't stay that way forever. We're all different and learning about life in different paces!
7. You have good and reliable friends
It's super great to see a movie that celebrates true friendship. Aside from being successful, having real friends is another indicator that you have a great, healthy, and happy life!
Our friends also mean the world to us! This is why it's so easy to relate to how Charlie and Harper value their personal friendships. Sure, sometimes we all drive each other crazy - like with Duncan (Pete Davidson), the openly gay roommate-slash-best-friend of Charlie. Duncan may openly hate on Suze (Joan Smalls), Charlie's girlfriend, but he still shows support for his friend by respecting his decisions and giving him unsolicited real talks.
There's also the scene with Becca (Meredith Hagner) where she pledged to read the crappiest article written by her best friends. And of course, that scene where golf guy ditched Harper, Charlie came into the rescue! These were very heartwarming scenes which reminded us of our own best friends!
6. Your life's a mess, but all you can think of is FOOD
This one is really important! 🍕 The lead characters of this movie are super relatable because of their love for food!
Harper's a professional popcorn and chips hoarder, and Charlie is pretty much a professional eater, too - remember the great lengths they went to to protect the pizza? 😛
Let's not kid ourselves. Life is hard, adulthood is even harder, but food is forever!
That's basically what we witnessed in that memorable pizza scene. So whenever you've had a long hard day at the office, you know you can order pizza with your all-time favourite toppings and everything will be right with the world. Also, a Netflix session isn't complete without the best snacks possible! So yes, food is ALWAYS crucial to life!
5. You've been having a hard time lately
Being a grown-up isn't easy... and unfortunately, although you always try, you feel like adulthood is a complete struggle and that you have no idea what you're doing.
This movie really understands that you're not on a magical journey. That work isn't just a walk in the park. Similar to the characters here, you're still figuring out who you are while learning what kind of job you really want. Sometimes you even wonder if it's okay to quit a job you absolutely loathe especially when you have no other source of income at the moment while trying to meet a decent person you want to call your own.
The list of what you want to happen in your life is pretty endless, and there are days that are just insanely tough. But that's all just part of life - and it's also the morale of the movie.
4. You have to laugh it off sometimes
Laughter is the best medicine, as they always say, and it's also a daily necessity if you want to survive life with your sanity intact.
Thankfully, this movie isn't just relatable - it's also incredibly hilarious! So if you want to laugh, open Netflix and type in 'Set It Up'. And whenever you remember this face and these scenes... 😂
3. You choose your own path
If you've chosen your own path or you're contemplating about it, you can easily relate to Charlie and Harper. As you watch the movie, you'll see that they're both following their dreams in their own ways. Charlie is hoping to find a job that he actually likes, while Harper is pursuing her ambition to become a sports writer.
The movie also shows how important it is to keep your personal values intact. That even though you're working with the worst people ever, you'll still see the goodness in every situation and you're sure you won't become one of them - y'know, those a-holes. 😛
Isn't it pretty cool and inspiring to see how these characters decide what they really want to do in their own lives? Even just by realizing that the best meal of their life only cost $5.
2. You love "LOVE"
Let's be real -- love moves in mysterious ways! Take it from Becca:
"When I was little, my grandmother, she used to say, 'you like because' and 'you love despite'. You like someone because of all their qualities and you love someone despite of some of their qualities. I like you almost as much as I love you..."
You'll be able to relate to Charlie and Harper so much even after they set up their bosses. Of course, life isn't easy peasy that Rick and Kirsten would end up together just because they were set up. We're sad that didn't work out because of reasons, but that's what happens in real life. However, it's nice to see how Charlie and Harper's friendship developed into deeper feelings for each other.
Imagine how hard it could have been to have feelings for each other without admitting anything. They even just let each other see and date other people, wondering if there would ever be a time for them to admit how they truly felt. Sure, that was slow burn and torture but that's how love works in this movie!
1. Life surprises you everytime
Of course, we all know the formula of a rom-com film -- Charlie and Harper would end up together. But the story isn't all about that! 'Set It Up' proves that life can continue to surprise you, and that's why you have to keep going and keep believing that good things are going t happen to you - even if it doesn't seem that way right now.
So if you feel like you're not doing well at work or you just need a break from everything else, we highly suggest you to start another binge! Be inspired and find what you really love. We know you can do it!
We support your decision and in fact, we're right there with you! ;)
Be consistent and include these as part of your daily bread. Ask every member of your family (at least) to support you and do the same. Like a ripple effect, at least 5/10 ratio of people has a bigger impact than 2/10 ratio of saving mother earth.
